A Tropical Paradise Full of Form and Colour

My clients wanted a tropical paradise: a place that would assault the senses with beauty of form and colour.

Using Australian tree ferns and Trachycarpus, we created an instant canopy under which we planted exotic arum lilies, Nandina and herbs for the eating area.

Carex Everillo was used to brighten the shady area, and the cedar seating was treated to help it keep its warm, earthy colours.

Tiles, Canopy and an Elevated Garden View

This Arundel garden is designed to be experienced both outside and from the basement kitchen window, where the tiles and planting become vital parts of the view.

A Garden Seen From Inside

The tiles were an important choice because the elevated garden is viewed from a basement kitchen window. They are a delight from this room and a vital part of the design.

Exotic Planting in Shade

Tree ferns, Trachycarpus, arum lilies, Nandina, herbs and Carex Everillo create a rich canopy and a brighter, more sensory shaded garden.

Arundel Gardens and Local History

The old Arundel page focused on the castle, its gardens and the town's long association with formal garden design.

Arundel Castle has nearly 1,000 years of history, with grounds overlooking the River Arun. Its oldest features date back to the late eleventh century, including the motte and gatehouse.

The castle gardens were restored from 1987 onwards and include hot and cool herbaceous borders, a cut flower border, a Victorian kitchen garden, restored peach house and vinery, a chapel garden planted in white and a rose garden in a former bowling green.

Within the castle precincts, historic lawns, terraces, yew hedges, woodland and parkland all show how formal structure and landscape setting can work together over time.

Garden Design in Arundel: FAQs

A few practical answers for Arundel homeowners considering a new garden design.

Do you design gardens in Arundel and nearby Arun Valley villages?

Yes. Glorious Gardens Sussex works with clients in Arundel and the surrounding West Sussex area, designing gardens that suit the home, the local setting and the way each client wants to use the space.

Can you design a tropical or exotic-feeling garden?

Yes. Andrew can design with bold foliage, canopy, colour, shade planting and materials to create a lush, atmospheric garden suited to the site.

How does the garden design process start?

It starts with a conversation and, where useful, a site visit. Andrew listens to how you use the garden, what is not working, what you love, and what level of design support you need before recommending the next step.

Can you help with a complete garden redesign?

Yes. Depending on the project, Andrew can provide a full design service covering ideas, layout, planting, materials, detailed drawings and guidance through the build so the finished garden follows the design intent.
