Bespoke garden design for Haywards Heath homes and Mid Sussex gardens, with modern structure, geometric planting and softer borders that connect the house with the landscape beyond.
I wanted to create my own take on a pre-existing, unimplemented design and use more geometric shaped plants while continuing the gabion wall around the property.
The aim was to take the modernity of the house and link it with the fields beyond, so angles collide with softer planting.
That tension gives the garden continuing interest, while the planting still needs to be robust and low maintenance.

This Haywards Heath garden uses geometry, gabion structure and softer planting to connect a modern house with its wider setting.
The design carries the gabion wall around the property and uses strong angles to echo the modernity of the house, while opening the garden towards the fields beyond.
The planting is designed to be practical as well as expressive, with forms and textures that give the garden interest without becoming demanding to look after.
The old Haywards Heath page included Borde Hill, local geology and Oathall Farm as part of the area's garden and landscape context.
Borde Hill, near Haywards Heath, is known as one of the country's great gardens. It includes the Azalea Ring, rhododendron gardens, a rose garden, an Italian garden, subtropical dells, woodland walks, lakeside strolls and Grade II* listed parkland.
Haywards Heath lies on a complex succession of sandstones, silty sandstones and mudstones of the Hastings Beds. The drift geology is limited in places to alluvium and head deposits along the Scrase Stream, a tributary of the Ouse, making local soil and drainage important considerations for planting.
Oathall Farm was established in 1941 in response to the Dig for Victory campaign. It has grown from an acre of cultivated school land into extensive fields, animal enclosures, glasshouses and a farm shop, reflecting the area's continuing relationship with cultivation and practical horticulture.

A practicing artist as well as a designer, Andrew brings a considered eye for form, colour and proportion to every project. Every garden starts with listening carefully to the client and the place.

It starts with a conversation and, where useful, a site visit. Andrew listens to how you use the garden, what is not working, what you love, and what level of design support you need before recommending the next step.
Yes. Depending on the project, Andrew can provide a full design service covering ideas, layout, planting, materials, detailed drawings and guidance through the build so the finished garden follows the design intent.
Tell Andrew what you are working with and what you would like your garden to become. A conversation is the best place to start.
