Bespoke garden design for Henfield homes and village gardens, shown here through a dramatic sculpture garden that unites formal structure with informal planting.
My client was intrigued by whether formal and informal styles could be successfully united, as he wanted something dramatic to house his Usain Bolt sculpture.
I used topiary, fennel, Stipa gigantea, lavender and alliums to give a fresh green summer look.
At the same time, the garden has enough structure to look smart in winter.
Start Your ProjectThis Henfield garden brings formal and informal elements together, using strong structure to hold generous seasonal planting around a dramatic sculptural focal point.
The garden needed to give the Usain Bolt sculpture enough presence without making the whole space feel stiff. Topiary and clear structure give the garden confidence.
Fennel, Stipa gigantea, lavender and alliums create a fresh green summer feeling, while the underlying structure keeps the garden composed through winter.
The original Henfield page connected the village's heritage with horticultural societies, geology and historic garden design.
Henfield sits in the Horsham district of West Sussex, between London and Brighton, and was mentioned in the Domesday Book. The village has a rich heritage of cultural and architectural treasures.
A horticultural and floricultural society was founded between 1862 and 1872 to encourage the cottage labourer, and the Henfield and District Chrysanthemum Society held annual shows from 1884. A village produce association started in 1948 and remained part of the local gardening culture for decades.
Henfield lies within the Low Weald, with Weald Clay around the area and a spur of Lower Greensand silty sandstone beneath the village. The River Adur and surrounding Brooks also shape the local landscape. Chestfield Park, redesigned in the 1960s by Percy Cane, adds another local example of formal garden planning and planting.

Yes. Depending on the project, Andrew can provide a full design service covering ideas, layout, planting, materials, detailed drawings and guidance through the build so the finished garden follows the design intent.
Tell Andrew what you are working with and what you would like your garden to become. A conversation is the best place to start.
