Bespoke garden design for Lewes homes and South Downs settings, shown here through a contemporary garden with sweeping Corten steel, stepped planting and a formal pond.
I used sweeping ribbons of Corten steel to give a rice paddy effect to this area of the garden that needed to be retained.
Six bifold doors now look out to this stepped area: an altar to small and unusual plants, and a kind of very modern rockery.
The ribbons sweep around to meet a formal pond umbrellaed with Australian tree ferns.

This Lewes garden turns a retained area into a sculptural planted feature, using Corten steel, level changes and strong planting as part of the view from inside the home.
The Corten steel ribbons hold the level change while giving the planting a strong, flowing structure that feels deliberate rather than purely practical.
Small and unusual plants, a formal pond and Australian tree ferns create detail and atmosphere for a garden that is seen every day from the bifold doors.
The old Lewes page focused on the town's garden society and the historic herb gardens of Lewes Priory.
The Lewes and District Garden Society has been sharing a love of gardens and gardening for decades. It began with funds raised from a plant sale in St Michael's Hall, and from the start looked at gardening, history, design and plant collecting.
Lewes Priory has a herb garden representing aspects of a typical medieval monastic herb garden. Although the original gardens and orchards are no longer known in detail, historic monastery plans and herbals give clues to raised beds, paths and plants used for cooking, dyeing, decoration, ritual and healing.
The Priory site also reflects the importance of orchards, with an apple tree representing the fruit-growing history of the place and rare local apple varieties planted near the Battle of Lewes Monument.

A few practical answers for Lewes homeowners considering a new garden design.
Yes. Glorious Gardens Sussex works with clients in Lewes and nearby East Sussex villages, creating gardens that suit the home, the site and the way each client wants to live outdoors.
Yes. Andrew can use retaining elements, paths, planting and water to turn awkward levels into a distinctive part of the garden design.
It starts with a conversation and, where useful, a site visit. Andrew listens to how you use the garden, what is not working, what you love, and what level of design support you need before recommending the next step.
Yes. Depending on the project, Andrew can provide a full design service covering ideas, layout, planting, materials, detailed drawings and guidance through the build so the finished garden follows the design intent.
Tell Andrew what you are working with and what you would like your garden to become. A conversation is the best place to start.
