Bespoke garden design for Lindfield homes and village gardens, shown here through a circular landing place with water, pleached hornbeams and raised corten-edged planting.
This area of the client's garden was a large empty space and did not entice anyone towards it.
I created a circular, self-contained landing place that would encourage people to go up the hill and enjoy the serenity of water and a protective ring of pleached hornbeams.
We raised the soil levels using corten edging by 200mm to give us more root space above the heavy clay, then extended this theme throughout the garden.

This Lindfield garden shows how structure, level changes, water and planting can draw people into a part of the garden that previously felt unused.
The circular landing place gives the upper garden a clear purpose, making the journey up the hill feel inviting rather than incidental.
Raising the soil with corten edging created more workable root space above heavy clay and gave the garden a strong design language to repeat elsewhere.
Andrew's old Lindfield page included local history and garden culture, so this section keeps that original material on the new location page.
The name Lindfield means open land with lime trees, and the village has a rich historic and architectural heritage. The ancient High Street is lined with lime trees and has many medieval and post-medieval timber-framed houses, with a natural spring-fed pond at the bottom of the street.
The Eastern Road Nature Reserve sits alongside the Scrase Stream and provides wetland habitat for birds, butterflies, insects, frogs, newts and dragonflies. The surrounding countryside forms part of the High Weald, an ancient landscape of small fields, woodland, rolling hills, steep valleys and sandstone outcrops.
Lindfield also has a strong gardening culture, from local open gardens to its long-running horticultural society. The Lindfield Jungle, a small densely planted tropical-feeling garden, was highly placed in the BBC Gardeners' World Magazine Garden of the Year competition.
Andrew started his first gardening business at 14 years old in Sydney, Australia. Since founding Glorious Gardens Sussex in 2010, he has designed gardens for clients across Brighton, Hove, Lindfield and the wider Sussex area.
A practicing artist as well as a designer, Andrew brings a considered eye for form, colour and proportion to every project. Every garden starts with listening carefully to the client and the place.

It starts with a conversation and, where useful, a site visit. Andrew listens to how you use the garden, what is not working, what you love, and what level of design support you need before recommending the next step.
Yes. Depending on the project, Andrew can provide a full design service covering ideas, layout, planting, materials, detailed drawings and guidance through the build so the finished garden follows the design intent.
Tell Andrew what you are working with and what you would like your garden to become. A conversation is the best place to start.
