Bespoke garden design for Shoreham-by-Sea homes and coastal gardens, shown here through a blank-slate lawn transformed into an atmospheric journey to a lower seating area.
This garden was created from a blank slate: a grassy lawn going over 3.5 metres in height down to the bottom of the garden.
We wanted the space to be intriguing and an adventure to walk down to the lower seating area.
Ten-foot pine trees were brought in, as well as three giant olive trees. The aim was to create a lush, atmospheric space that would survive coastal winds.
Start Your ProjectThis Shoreham-by-Sea garden uses height, trees and layered planting to turn a steep blank lawn into a sheltered, atmospheric route through the space.
The design makes the change in level part of the experience, leading visitors down through planting towards the lower seating area.
Pine trees and giant olives give the garden maturity, shelter and drama, helping the planting cope with coastal winds while creating a memorable mood.
The old Shoreham page was published under a misspelled slug, but it contains useful local history for the new Shoreham-by-Sea page.
The Swiss Gardens once offered boating and amusements, with a small steam boat called the Basilisk and several other forms of craft on the lake. Only a small section of the lake remains, but it is part of Shoreham's garden and leisure history.
The Shoreham-by-Sea Horticultural and Allotments Society has long links with the Royal Horticultural Society and local community gardening. The old page highlighted talks, seasonal produce and collaboration with knowledgeable local gardeners.
Shoreham's landscape is shaped by the South Downs, chalk, the River Adur and former marshy estuary land. This geography affects soil, drainage, exposure and the way gardens relate to the wider coastal and river setting.
