How to build your own pond:
Garden ponds can be one of the more challenging additions to install into a wildlife garden.
Firstly, a slightly shaded area that still sees the sunlight is perfect to minimise too much algae growth, however not under a big tree that loses lots of its leaves.
Once the perfect place is found, the area has to be dug, where a small pond can be between 1 to 3 feet deep (whilst varying the depth throughout the pond). Even in a small garden, the bigger the pond the better for effect. You can make planting shelves and a shallow beach access area for invertibrates.
The pond has to be lined, first with sand and a fleece liner to protect the rubber membrane. Once this is done it can be filled slowly with water and then decorated with stones to make a border.
After this, you can add aquatic plants which will be vital for any wildlife in the pond.
Glorious Gardens can expertly design and install your pond for you.
However, if you find limited space for a pond in your garden, using a bucket or sealed plant pot filled with soil can provide a habitat for some water plants. These mini-ponds can still host insects and be an interesting feature of a smaller garden.
