My client inherited a large front garden that had been shingled over. Rather than raised beds, we suggested to him that we design a shingle garden in the spirit of Derek Jarman and Beth Chatto.

Over time the plants will fill up the space whilst leaving a good amount of space to wander around the shingle and sit in the breakfast sun. The garden is very low maintenance which is what our busy client wanted and yet full of interesting shapes and seasonal colour. We used big limestone blocks to anchor the shingle and give the airy plants a contrast of weight and volume.
